Koşuyolu High Specialty Training And Research Hospital

On January 24, 1985, upon the directive given by the then Prime Minister Turgut ÖZAL to the Minister of Health Mehmet AYDIN, Dr. Kemal BEYAZIT, Dr. Mehmet ÖZDEMİR and Dr. Cevat YAKUT and their colleagues from the Turkish High Specialization Hospital were assigned to establish a Cardiovascular Center in Istanbul with a special emphasis on Coronary Bypass, to fill the great gap in this field and to reduce the flow of patients abroad for Coronary Bypass surgery. For this center to be established, the "Non-Tuberculosis Chest Diseases and Asthma Hospital" operating in Kadıköy Koşuyolu was considered. This center started the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases with the support of the Turkish High Specialization Hospital.

As of September 15, 1986, it was separated from the support of the Turkish High Specialization Hospital and started to work as an independent Cardiovascular Center under the Chief Medical Directorate of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın GÜRAN. As a result of the full trust of the patients and the enthusiastic and dedicated work of the young team, the first 100 open heart surgeries were accomplished without any patient loss.

Kosuyolu Heart and Research Hospital filled the gap in the field of Cardiovascular Surgery and Interventional Cardiology, which did not exist in Istanbul at that time, and the number of patients both admitted and diagnosed and treated increased rapidly.

Koşuyolu Heart and Research Hospital filled the gap in the field of Cardiovascular Surgery and Interventional Cardiology, which did not exist in Istanbul at that time, and the number of patients both admitted and diagnosed and treated increased rapidly.

In 1987, "Non-Tuberculosis Chest Diseases and Asthma Hospital" was renamed as "Heart and Asthma Hospital" and then "Koşuyolu Heart and Research Hospital" and continued to serve in Koşuyolu until 2005 with a closed area of 12853 m2 and 186 bed capacity.

By 1988, a modern blood bank, the addition of a new block to the hospital building, the organization of the "Emergency Revascularization Unit", the establishment of a central liquid oxygen tank, and the supply of equipment and supplies for operating rooms, intensive care units, blood gases and other laboratories were completed. In the meantime, it has fulfilled a historical and national duty by restoring historical mansions.

One of the first activities during the establishment of the Kosuyolu Hospital was an animal laboratory for experimental surgery. Here, "Experimental Model of Cardiomyoplasty Surgery" was realized as the first project as an acute and chronic animal experiment on goats.

The Kosuyolu team has been the most active practitioners in clinical research and in achieving modern developments in cardiovascular surgery in Turkey and in the establishment of the most complex surgical treatment methods and the first wide application of coronary surgery.

The Kosuyolu team has fulfilled a historic mission by bringing new impetus to cardiac surgery in Istanbul. It has accomplished many complex operations and surgical procedures. It has achieved one of the world's few successful series in aortic surgery, especially in the treatment of Dissecting Aortic Aneurysms.

The methods and principles applied by the Koşuyolu team have been adopted by the medical community and a more scientific, modern and productive movement has begun in these institutions.

It is known by the medical community that the Kosuyolu Model is the biggest driving force in the emergence of the modern scientific competition environment that Cardiovascular and Cardiology centers have reached in Turkey today.

In 1990, with the retirement of Dr. Yalçın GÜRAN, Dr. Cevat YAKUT became the chief physician. The scientific studies of Koşuyolu Heart and Research Hospital have also made an impact and gained prestige in many national and international academic circles. The works of our physicians have been included in domestic and international publications. It has been the institution that has organized the most scientific activities in national and international congresses, meetings, panels and symposiums.

In addition, in a significant number of international and national congresses, meetings, panels and symposiums, the Koşuyolu team was asked to express their knowledge and experience and shared this knowledge and experience with their colleagues.

In the field of specialization in nursing, the "Intensive Care Nursing" certificate program was introduced for the first time in State Hospitals.

In 1988, the preparations for "Heart Transplantation" were notified to the Ministry of Health, staff training, construction and equipment of sterilization rooms and other scientific and technical preparations were completed and as a result, the first successful and long follow-up Heart Transplantation in our country was performed by the Koşuyolu team in September 1989.

The preparations and knowledge on heart transplantation were constantly renewed, and on January 22, 1993, a heart obtained as a result of "Multiorgan Donation", which was performed for the second time in Turkey, was successfully transplanted to a patient who had previously undergone open heart surgery for the first time in our country.

In June 2005, our hospital moved to its new building with a closed area of 40308 m2 and a capacity of 465 beds in Kartal, Kartal Koşuyolu High Specialization Training and Research Hospital by adding Surgical Gastroenterology training to the training previously provided in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery Anesthesia and Reanimation branches. Our hospital currently has a capacity of 465 beds and 114 intensive care beds. Our hospital has 12 operating rooms and 8 Angiography Catheterization Laboratories and is one of the few centers of our country in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
